About the Kindergarten

Thomastown Community Kindergarten was started in 2001 by a group of parents who recognised the need for a deeply child-centred educational space where children are valued as imaginative and creative individuals; where their development is nurtured through self-discovery in a safe, rhythmic, unhurried and home-like environment; and where creative outdoor play and exploration of nature is a cornerstone of their day. None of which could be found in the locality at that time.

Working in close partnership with parents and the community, Thomastown Community Kindergarten was created and it began to foster children’s deep connections with themselves, their peers and their world. We take many aspects of the Steiner Waldorf approach along with our teachers' own experiences, learning’s and qualifications when planning meaningful and developmentally appropriate activities and learning goals for your child. We work to develop an education which is a living, loving process, recognising that as a child changes and grows, so does their readiness and ability to take up certain tasks.

Each day we challenge, provoke, excite, stimulate, teach, and investigate with the children.

Every year as families and their children move onto their next adventures, they let us know how magical and special the kindergarten has been in their lives and we hope to continue spreading the magic for years to come.

Why are we Fundraising?

The Short Of It:

We want to continue doing what we’re doing for as long as possible!

The Long Of It:

We have been operating from the same premises for over 20 years and now the opportunity to buy the building has arisen. We have never before had the opportunity to call our home ‘permanent’, and to secure the future of the Kindergarten for the children of our Community. To put this in context, having looked extensively and spoken with the Kilkenny County Council there aren’t any available premises in the area that fit the criteria of what our Kindergarten needs to function effectively. If we cannot buy the premises that we currently use then we are at serious risk of becoming homeless.

If we can make our dream a reality, we can help to foster the imaginations of many future generations of Kindergarteners (and help test the capabilities of their Mammy’s and Daddy’s washing machines!). Joking aside, we have a once in a lifetime opportunity, we have 70% of the necessary funds; we’re nearly there; we just need some help to get over the line and if you can help – Thank you!

In addition, owning the building means we can then apply for the many Green Energy grants that are available to make improvements to the building and to lessen our Carbon Footprint; something we cannot consider doing as tenants.
