Burren Chernobyl Project

Burren Chernobyl Project (BCP) was established in 1993 to help with the child victims of the fallout from the Chernobyl reactor explosion. Since then BCP have undertaken hundreds of projects to assist the children and their families who are enduring the effects of exposure to radiation and the other social and economic problems facing them in Belarus.

Some of our current projects include:

Humanitarian Aid Shipments:

Over the past 26 years we have sent 110 loads of aid to Belarus. Each shipment is full to the brim with much needed aid including; medical supplies, mobility aids, clothes, furniture, adult incontinence pads and children’s pampers, and much more. Our loyal group of volunteers help to gather and load the aid from all corners of Ireland.

Medical Programme:

Our Medical Programme is extensive with multiple projects falling under the one umbrella. Projects such as employing medical professionals in orphanages to medical volunteers travelling annually, one of the most active parts of the programme is our Wheelchair Wizard. Our highly skilled and very passionate volunteer Sean builds, repairs, adjusts wheelchairs for children in Cherven and Gorodishche orphanages and also travels to many communities helping people with disabilities in need.

Nutritional Programme:

We supply vital medical and nutritional aids for very sick children. We also help with providing special foods and supplements for particularly ill children and adults.

Building Programme:

Constructing, extending, renovating, updating, orphanages, asylums, hospices, day centres, homes, you name it we’ve had our hand in it. Over the years scores of groups of builders from Ireland have travelled to provide free skilled labour for some life changing projects across Belarus. Improving living conditions and improving lives.

Volunteering Programme:

We have had volunteers travelling to Belarus since 1993. Each year our volunteer programme gets stronger and grows bigger. Volunteers travel all year round to spend time in the orphanages for children and young people with disabilities. Although the conditions have improved immensely, human connection, camaraderie, and one-to-one attention are all basic human needs that these children are missing. Our volunteers travel in groups to provide CARE camps. Organising activities such as sports, music and arts and crafts for all ages and abilities. For those who are bed bound, simple sensory play and stimulation are incredibly effective.

We’ve had TY groups travelling the past few years which have been fantastic and we also have local Belarusian volunteers who visit the children on a regular basis.

All the money raised here on iDonate goes directly to the work we do in Belarus.

Many thanks to all our supporters and volunteers for your continued support.

Without you all we would be lost.

Go raibh míle maith agaibh!
