Cancer Fund for Children (NI)

Cancer Fund for Children (NI) provides practical, emotional and financial support to local children with cancer and their families in Northern Ireland. Our Specialist Team provides support at home, in the community and on the hospital ward. We also offer free therapeutic short breaks at our Daisy Lodge facility in Newcastle, Co. Down to families from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Cancer Fund for Children (NI) understands the devastating impact a cancer diagnosis and treatment can have on the whole family and that beyond essential medical care, there is a family life that needs to be rebuilt.
Our team is here to listen and help families cope with the impact cancer has on their lives and support them from diagnosis throughout and beyond treatment.

overview

We know the financial demand on families when a child or parent is diagnosed with cancer and all our services are free of charge to families. Our services include:

  • One-to-One Support - Children and young people diagnosed with cancer often struggle to cope with feelings of isolation and loneliness. One-to-one support on the hospital ward or at home gives young people the opportunity to express their feelings and fears openly with an experienced Specialist.
  • Therapeutic Group Support - Cancer Fund for Children (NI) provides group activities in the home, in the community and at our residential centre, Narnia. We provide events and workshops which help children and young people express how they really feel, cope better and meet others in a similar situation.
  • Sibling Support - Our team of Specialists offer support to siblings who are worried, lonely and vulnerable. Through group support, siblings have the opportunity to meet other young people in a similar situation, share their experiences, learn new skills and make new friends.
  • Young Shoulders Programme - Our Young Shoulders Programme supports children aged 0-24 whose parent has cancer. Through therapeutic group support young people feel more supported and better able to cope.
  • Financial Support - We offer four financial grants to help ease the financial worries a cancer diagnosis can cause:
    • Road Miles helps cover the cost of travelling to and from hospital for treatment.
    • Home Heating helps with the cost of heating the family home during treatment.
    • Travel for Treatment helps families who have to travel outside Northern Ireland for treatment or surgery.
    • Travel for Short Breaks covers the costs of travel for families staying at either our Therapeutic Short Break Centre or Self-Catering Cottages.
  • Bereavement Support - The loss of a child or parent has a devastating impact on families. Cancer Fund for Children’s Specialist Team will continue to support family members who have lost a loved one to cancer, helping them to work through their grief together. We can also signpost families to other organisations which can provide bereavement support if required.
  • Therapeutic Short Breaks - Daisy Lodge is our purpose-built therapeutic centre for families affected by cancer. A therapeutic short break allows families to spend quality time together during a traumatic and challenging time. Daisy Lodge is unique in that it offers families both privacy and the opportunity to gain support from others going through similar experiences.
  • Self-Catering Breaks - A self-catering break at Pine, Birch or Oak Cottages in Coleraine provides families with private quality time together away from the daily challenges of living with cancer.
