Sharon is 35 years old. She is from a small, rural area near the village of Hollymount in Co.Mayo. After finishing work on the evening of December 9th, 2021, she was returning to her car when she was tragically hit by an oncoming vehicle. Regrettably, Sharon acquired many injuries including a traumatic, life changing brain injury. She underwent emergency, life saving surgery in the Beaumont Hospital. Subsequently, she spent another 11 months in Galway University Hospital. In November 2022, she was transferred to the National Rehabilitation Centre in Dun Laoghaire where her treatment is ongoing. So far, Sharon’s recovery has been slow and her future is uncertain. She is likely to require full-time care for the unforeseeable future. Consequently, this traumatic incident has resulted in major emotional upheaval for Sharon’s family.

As many of you will know, Sharon herself, worked wholeheartedly as a physiotherapist with the HSE giving her best to those in need. She invested time and energy into all her patients, carefully considering each of their individual needs. She nurtured and cared for people and animals with an innate sense of warmth and compassion. Sharon was happiest doing the simple things in life - grocery shopping for her dad, walking her dog and riding her horse.

Sharon is receiving 24 hour nursing care. She is currently unable to mobilise independently or communicate but her family have witnessed tears of emotion on their visits. So for now, we are Sharon’s voice. We as a community want to raise funds for Sharon and her family as they face the unknown. We are reaching out to you, to ask you, to help us to help them meet the costs of supporting Sharon now and in the future.

Monies raised will assist with management of her ongoing care and vital family support through her rehabilitation. This may include housing adaptation/vehicle change for wheelchair accessibility, costs of frequent and much needed family hospital visits. The hope and aspirations are that eventually Sharon will recover to a stage where she can return home to her family, horses and pets and be given the level of care she needs.A percentage of all funds raised will be donated to Quest Brain Injury services, a community rehabilitative service for Galway, Mayo, Roscommon areas.
