Isobel (IzzyB to her friends) in 2014 (then 21 months) was treated for a Wilms Tumour in Our Lady’s Children's Hospital, Crumlin. IzzyB had chemotherapy before surgery to remove her kidney along with the tumour followed by a post-operative chemotherapy regime.

12 months post treatment, (two weeks after her 3rd Birthday and just a few weeks before the 2nd annual IzzyB’s Away with the Fairies day) a routine chest x-ray found 2 new lesions on her lung and she commenced a 7 month Chemotherapy/Radiation protocol followed by surgery just before Christmas to remove the tumours and part of her lung.

IzzyB is now thankfully cancer free and is recuperating well.She was delighted to return to all her little friends in créche at Nurtures Best, Tarmonbarry in March 2016.

This event is being arranged to raise much needed funds and awareness to help improve services for children affected by cancer and assist vital services for children and families affected by this disease.

We have chosen to raise funds for Childhood Cancer Foundation this year.

Childhood Cancer Foundation is a national registered charity run by volunteer parents of children with a cancer diagnosis. The charity has one part time employee. The charity aims to raise awareness of childhood cancer and runs the Light It Up Gold Campaign every September which is International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. We also advocate for improved services and assist to fund essential supports for children/young adults and families living with childhood cancer.

They are currently fully funding three projects on St John’s Haematology/Oncology Ward.

These are:

 Play services on the ward’s busy day unit

 Beads of Courage™ This is an internationally recognised arts in medicine programme provided to children with cancer in many paediatric hospitals in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and other countries which helps them to understand and cope with their cancer diagnosis.

 A medical research project at the hospital, in conjunction with UCD School of Nursing and the Julie Wren Trust which investigates the benefits of complementary therapies for children receiving treatment for cancer.

They are also working with the Irish Cancer Society on the development of a Peer to Peer Support Programme for parents of children/young adults diagnosed with cancer. The charity has also advocated for improved services for children with cancer and their families in the planned National Cancer Strategy 2016 to 2025
