Charities across the country who depend so much on fundraising activities have been quite severely hit as a result of the inability to host their usual events but at this moment, have more requests and needs for their service than ever before.

Caring for Cork Together is making an urgent appeal for 3 well known Cork Charities

We are appealing to individuals, families, businesses and communities to join together and help us to reach our target of €60,000 for these vital services.

This June & July we are asking people to take on the Camino Challenge in Cork. As we cannot travel, just yet, we are asking people to do the distance of the Camino Ingles which is 110km (and complete this target within Government guidelines in proximity to your home).

The Camino de Santiago, also called the French Way, is an ancient pilgrimage route that runs more than 790 km across the top of Spain, all the way to Santiago de Compostela. During the Middle Ages, the Camino was responsible for the largest movement of people in Europe: millions of people, both rich and poor, made their way to Santiago de Compostela, where the pilgrim mass and certificate of pilgrimage ensured they would spend less time in purgatory. There are thousands of people that travel there every year to walk the camino and fulfil a personal ambition and goal.

We are asking people to walk/run the 110km distance within the period from Monday June 1st until Friday 31st July. You can set the pace yourself and decide on your own daily distance. We would ask that you would share your journey and tag us on our social media platforms.

Of course, the most important aspect of the Camino Challenge in Cork is that all important fundraising for our 3 Cork Charities. We would ask that each individual that takes part, would set a personal target of raising €50 as a minimum. We would be grateful if that target can be exceeding as every euro will count and every euro is vital for the services of the respective charities.

Marymount Hospice:

Marymount University Hospital & Hospice (Marymount) is celebrating 150 years in 2020 founded in 1870 by the Religious Sisters of Charity, it is the oldest hospice in Ireland. The original hospital was built on the north side of the city on Wellington Road. The service relocated in 2011 to purpose- built, modern, high-quality facilities in Curraheen, Cork.

Marymount is an independent voluntary teaching Hospital & Hospice, a registered charity governed by a Board of Directors. We provide care for people with life-limiting illness through our hospice services as well as care for the dependent older person. We provide complex care to each individual regardless of age or diagnosis.

Our services include a 44-bed in-patient unit, a day care service (day hospice), an out-patient department, community-based services and bereavement and family support services. For older people, Marymount Hospital provides long-term care, respite and palliative care support services. We are located within a state-of-the-art facility providing specialised and expert care to a population base of 560,000 people.  Each year we support more than 3,000 families across Cork and Munster. Each year Marymount Hospice needs to raise €3.5 million to sustain the level of service which are provided to the community free of charge.

Cork Simon Community:

Cork Simon Community supports vulnerable men and women, young and old, from all walks of life who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Cork Simon offers care, support and accommodation to over 1,000 people each year.
Our services include outreach for people sleeping rough, day services and access to health care, a nightly soup run, emergency accommodation, high-support housing for people who need intensive supports, independent housing with visiting support, addiction and aftercare services, and a range of personal supports to enable people to move out of homelessness. Our door is always open and we support people for as long as they need us.

CUH Charity:

As the charitable arm of Cork University Hospital (CUH) and Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH), our mission at CUH Charity is to provide a wide range of life-changing and life-saving equipment, facilities and services to patients attending the hospitals. The continued support of individual and corporate donors, volunteers, supporters and hospital staff means that we can continue to support the enhancement and growth of the expert level of care provided by the CUH and CUMH.
