Event Details

We aim to walk from Dublin Bay to Galway Bay on one sunny ( long) weekend in August.

My nephew Fionn (aged 5) has been diagnosed with Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy , which is a cruel and degenerate muscle wasting condition.

DMD is progressive which in simple terms means it gets worse over time and the family will watch Fionn slowly regress through his milestones and gradually lose independence.  Muscle weakness already affects Fionn’s walking,  balancing and other day to day activities we all take for granted. Fionn already needs to use his power wheelchair and it is predicted that he will lose his ability to walk, becoming a fulltime powered wheelchair user by the age of 7 or 8. As every muscle in the body is affected by this condition Fionn will need to use full time ventilation as he gets older and will eventually need to rely on family and careers to participate in everyday life. Duchenne’s in life limiting and the average life expectancy of a child living with Duchennes is mid-twenties. There is no cure.

We cannot change Fionn’s condition, but as a family we are determined to take down as many barriers as possible for Fionn and work hard at adapting his environment to ensure he can participate in the world around him as independently as possible.

This is where we would like to ask for your help.

Due to the particularly aggressive nature of his diagnosis, the family will be required to move to a more suitable home in the coming year. The home will then need to be adapted significantly with the ultimate aim of providing a home to enable Fionn to grow and develop, with as little restrictions on his independence as possible. We need to future proof his home for space needed later in life, while also supporting his parents and siblings in the continuity of normal family life. The aim of our fundraising this year is to contribute to the cost of those adaptions.

We are taking on the batten passed by Andrew Harkness in his May challenge where he covered the distance from Edinburgh TO Dublin during the month of May.( www.fionnbrogantrust.ie/fundraising).

To celebrate our health and ability to explore the country in this post-lockdown phase, we are hiking the width of the country over 4-5 days ( approx distance of 210km)

We are asking all friends who are able to, recognizing that for many it just won’t be possible given the financial uncertainty that Covid has brought, help us to support this wonderful boy and his family.

And, of course, please share where you can and also consider choosing The Fionn Brogan Trust for any fundraising you, your friends or colleagues might be doing in the years ahead!

Lots of love, Niall Eddie and Diarmuid

Recent Updates

Thank you to all of our supports thus far. We have smashed our previous target and have raised the bar to 4500. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a progressive muscle wasting disease that makes those living with it physically weak. But we believe that having to live with this reality makes them incredibly strong. The incredible strength and defiance they show to not let Duchenne get the better of them, is awe inspiring. Our challenge is to cover 210km from Dublin Bay to Galway Bay in a long weekend. 210km or approximately 273595 steps. Like Fionn, we will take it one step at a time.
