Hello guys,
My name is Nessan Curran.
I lost my dad to suicide in 2006, 5 years after loosing my mam to cancer. My father found it very difficult after my mam passed away and he went downhill eventually ending his life. This was a very difficult time and affected me deeply for many years.
I don't want anyone to go through what I have after loosing my dad, so I'm trying to prevent suicide, promote suicide awareness and generate funds for Pieta house and their trained counsellors to try help people in need of support.
Last year 340 people died from suicide.
This event is based on 3 things:
1. suicide awareness
2. generation of funds for help and support for Pieta house
3. riding 1 kilometer as a tribute to each person who died of suicide last year
This is the first event I have put together and I'm hoping it can be an annual event that will go from strenght to strenght.
The event day will consist of a group of motorcyclists who will be riding 400 kilometers from Dublin to Cork. Each kilometer will mark and remember in tribute each person we lost last year to suicide.
On route to Cork we will be stopping off at points in various towns and villages putting up teddy bears with solar lights attached with support numbers for anyone in need. We will also be giving out green ribbons which comes under the awareness part of our event.
Mick Ryan is a man I met through the teddy bear idea, which he came up with. Mick does a lot of work for suicide awareness and Pieta house. He is an absolute gentleman and a friend I hold in high regard.
When we complete our tribute run to Cork, we will be linking up with some fantastic organisations and great people.
We will meet up with Penny Dinners Cork who are fantastic people helping the homeless in Cork. We are also meeting the River rescue and missing persons ireland, who are very commited to helping people in need. They carry out patrols along the river Lee in hope of preventing suicide. Another good friend of mine Adam, is going to play a song on the pipes that day in Cork.
