Skerries Town Twinning is a committee of Skerries Community Association CLG. Skerries was twinned with the Canton of Guichen (Brittany) in 1994. Over the years hundreds of people of all ages from Skerries have visited the canton and hundreds of people of all ages from Brittany have visited Skerries. Visits are usually organised around a theme (e.g. walking/rambling, music, sport, environment, school exchanges etc). Town twinning has its roots in the aftermath of World War 2. It aims to foster friendship between communities and develop good relations rather than building barriers. We share our experiences of life. We stay in each others' homes and we see what another country is like away from the tourist trail. Town twinning also helps develop foreign language skills (but language is not a barrier to having a rich twinning experience). Town twinning, in its own small way, helps to maintain good relations with our nearest EU neighbour and shines a little light on Ireland on the European stage. Skerries has twice won a Gold Star (awared by the European Commission) for its work in developing the twinning concept.
Skerries Town Twinning was established to foster friendship between communities by means of cultural, sporting and interest-centred contacts and exchanges.
It exists on a premise of mutual hospitality, by opening homes to each other and extending the hand of friendship.
Skerries is twinned with the Canton of Guichen (Brittany) and is developing relations with Srem (Poland).
