What is Shakti ?

Shakti means power in Nepali and is a 3 year project (2022-25) that is about enabling and supporting marginalised and underpriveliged people to transform their own lives.This work is carried out by SHEP's international partner Sahakarmi Samaj who have 25 years expererience of working at a grass roots level in Nepal.

Why Nepal?

SHEP and Sahakarmi Samaj's International Learning Partnership is 15 years old , and was started by our then Director Paul Doherty who had close links with Nepal.The partnership is one of equals and is an important part of SHEP's commitment to a more sustainable and just world.

Where will my money go ?

All donations will go directly to Sahakarmi's SHAKTI programme. It will be used to provide training and support to community groups and facilitators. This training supports people to become active citizens who can organise to improve their livelihoods and communities by advocating for themselves and applying to local government for the resouces they need.

What kind of resources?

These resources could be: water pumps; agricultural supplies; health and social supports or action around issues like drug abuse among young people.

What else will Shakti do ?

The training delivered by Sahakarmi Samaj includes: climate change resilience measures like agroecology (organic farming) and indigenous seed saving; leadership programmes for women; education around harmful and discriminatory practices and social inclusion of all people regardless of gender, caste, ethnicity, sexuality, disability, age, religion or marital status.

Sahakarmi also works with local government officials, training them to listen to their constituents and be responsive to community needs.
