The 7.8 and 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkey and northern Syria, causing widespread destruction. Thousands have lost their lives, with many more injured and displaced – including children – and these numbers continue to rise rapidly. Harsh winter weather in the entire region, including snow and heavy rain since yesterday, is making response efforts especially difficult.
In Syria the focus of UNICEF’s emergency response includes:
Nutrition & Water, Hygiene and Sanitation – supplying food, clean water, and hygiene kits to those who have been displaced.
Child Protection – assessing separated/unaccompanied children and providing urgent psychosocial support for those who have been traumatised.
Education – assessing damage to schools and the impact for children.
Looking into establishing Child Friendly Spaces to support children and caregivers affected by the disaster
