Our connection with The Gavin Glynn Foundation began just over one year ago, when our son, Matteo, was diagnosed with a brain tumour. A regular Saturday afternoon turned into a nightmare when he was brought into Tallaght children's hospital with what we thought was dehydration but turned out to be a lot worse, a parents worse nightmare, a brain tumour.
After emergency brain surgery in Temple Street Children's hospital, under the team of dr. Sweeney, Matteo had a successful 7 hour operation.
In the following weeks after meeting with the oncology team in Crumlin Children's hospital it was discussed that Matteo would require further treatment in Essen Germany. We are a family of 5 with Matteo being the youngest of 3 children. This is where we 1st came in contact with John and the team at The Gavin Glynn Foundation. John was straight on the phone organising flights and accommodation for our consultation meeting in Germany.
After this meeting a new plan for 8 weeks treatment in Germany was planned to start in no later than 2 weeks time.
Again the team was all over the planning, organising flights, VIP treatment with Aer Lingus through Dublin airport, transfers, accommodation and living expenses for the whole family. They aim to keep the family together for the duration of any treatment abroad in order to keep it as normal as possible for the child going through the treatment.
I am happy to say that after a successful trip to Germany, Matteo is doing great and looking forward to a healthy future. A lot of this is down to the positive experience we had in Germany by keeping the family together and making positive memories in a difficult situation.
We are only one of so many families The Gavin Glynn Foundation help out on a daily basis. We will be forever grateful to the team for all their help and we look forward to helping spread awareness about childhood cancer and The Gavin Glynn Foundation in the future.
We can also not forget the amazing support from our family and friends through the tough time and we are extremely grateful for all the support they provided.
Just as we arrived back from Germany last year John Glynn asked was I up for doing a Triathlon, in just over 3 weeks, which I politely declined but made the promise to do the KOG 2023, and so here we are.

Well done Neil and Mateo’s dad! To Mateo’s family - we were on the same ward in Temple Street around that time (sadly for the same reason) so am so pleased to hear that Mateo is doing so well
Fantastic event, delighted to be a small part of it
