In loving memory of our dear friend Hugh McFadden, a group of local Craughwell cyclists are taking on a meaningful challenge: cycling from Craughwell, Galway to Hugh’s home parish of Gweedore, Donegal—nearly 300km—in aid of Galway Hospice, on the last weekend of September.

This weekend holds deep significance, marking Hugh’s wedding anniversary and the birthdays of his beloved wife and eldest daughter—a time always close to his heart.

Hugh was a devoted husband to Edel and a proud father to Aileen, Maya, and Anna. A proud Donegal man and a passionate Liverpool supporter, he sadly missed seeing the Reds finally lift the Premier League trophy—but we know he was smiling down on that day.

He is dearly missed on the sidelines of Craughwell Camogie games and Craughwell United soccer matches, where he was always the proudest supporter of his girls.

Hugh faced his illness with immense courage and grace, never losing his humour or warmth—even in his final days.

In honour of Hugh, and driven by our love and memories of him, we ride.

From his adopted home of Craughwell, where he was deeply loved, to his cherished hometown of Gweedore, this ride is a tribute to a man who brought joy, laughter, and unwavering support to all around him.

We are forever grateful to Galway Hospice for the exceptional care they gave Hugh—welcoming even his loyal dog Cara into his final days—and for their continued support of Edel and the girls.
