Judi...
I'm climbing Everest Basecamp over the next two weeks and I have decided to climb in memory of my aunt Judi while raising funds for The Irish Cancer Society, particularly the nursing services.
Judi passed away from cancer on November 30th, 2022 aged 53 at home surrounded by her family.
Judi's wish was to be at home and be comfortable. It would have been impossible without our family as well as the support we had from our public health nurse, community nurses, doctors and night nurses.
We welcomed two wonderful night nurses in to care for Judi. They were kind and compassionate, exactly what Judi and the family needed at the time. We could sleep a bit better knowing she was being looked after and that they would contact us during the night if needed.
A little bit more about The Irish Cancer Society's Night Nurse service:
- Night nurses provide end of life care for cancer patients and their families in their own home.
- The service is available so that you and your loved one will receive nursing care, practical support and reassurance.
- Aim to keep your loved one comfortable and free of pain.
- Your nurse will work with you to give your loved one the highest standard of nursing care and ensure their comfort and dignity throughout the night.
- The night nurse will sit with your loved one during the night, unless you request otherwise. The night nurse will attend from the hours of 11pm – 7am.
- Night nurses are free of charge for up to 10 nights.
- Relies completely on voluntary donations to run the Night Nursing service.
Many of you may have had family use the service or know of people that have used it over the years. If you can donate please keep those that have passed and those night nurses in your thoughts.
There is no point trying to make sense why these things happen because we will never get a satisfactory answer.
Some things cannot be fixed. They can only be carried - Megan Devine
As I climb, I will think of Judi and the nurses that visited her, along with all the families throughout Ireland that are opening the door to an Irish Cancer Society Night Nurse tonight and in the future.
Many thanks for your support,
