Dear Friends,
The family of Ciaran Sutton with St. Margarets GFC is fundraising for Motor Neuron Disease Research headed by Professor Orla Hardiman of Beaumont Hospital.
MND is caused by cells in the brain and nerves called motor neurons. Over time these cells gradually stop working. It results in the progressive loss of these motor neurons that control voluntary muscles and gets worse over time. It can affect speech, swallowing, breathing, and mobility. MND significantly shortens life expectancy and can dramatically impact one's life. Now there is no cure, hence, this fundraiser is being organised for continued research by Prof. Hardiman and her team to enable them to make further headway to find that breakthrough in finding a cure soon.
Ciaran was given the diagnosis of this devastating disease in July 2023. Since the diagnosis, he has bravely worked throughout each day, has maintained his dignity, and is coping the best way he can with the support of his family. Ciaran has had to make many life-changing decisions, far too quickly, due to the rapid progression of this disease.
Ciaran is a well-known member of the community, was very involved in the 1970s with the youth of the parish, and was a member of the Macra Na Tuaithe and Feirme which involved drama, quizzes, and social events. His love and support for football, both his local St Margarets GAA and his county Dublin was always his joy, interest, and focus. He played from juvenile to senior levels in midfield and was renowned for his great pair of hands to catch a ball and his accuracy of delivery with his left foot. He played for his county at 21 and senior levels during Kevin Heffernan's era (Heffo's army!), a man whom Ciaran had great respect and admiration for. He travelled to New York in the 80s for new experiences and worked in construction and travelled with his work extensively. He played football while in New York in Gaelic Park where he played for Sligo and won a championship. He returned home and has worked in his business for the past 30 years but sadly the decision has been made to close the business.
Thank you in advance to all who contribute to the fundraiser which will provide funds to enable further research for MND.
