Gareth was born autistic with severe developmental delays. Through time his challenges, frustrations, and inability to communicate have led to self injurying. Unfortunately repeated self injurying has led to complications with his eyesight and he is completely blind in both eyes.
He lives in pain which is partially controlled via medication, but his eyes are deteriorating and he will may eventually need them replaced or removed. This also will bring its own new set of risks, uncertainty and complications. Gareth has access to a daycare service from Mon to Friday.
Gareth needs 24/7 supervision and Kieran provides this when Gareths not at his day service or respite. Respite is minimal and Gareth has access to approx. 1 to 2 nights away per month. The home where he avails of his respite love caring for him and it gives Kieran much needed time to reboot and have some time to catch up with friends or family. They would love to offer weekend breaks etc but unfortunately the HSE dont or won't fund this.
Gareth hasn't had a holiday in over 15 years, due to the complexity of his needs and unpredictable behaviour, not everywhere can comfortably and securely accommodate him. His Dad Kieran works hard to ensure Gareth is happy, healthy, safe and secure. This is obvious to those that know them. I am helping Kieran to raise money to purchase a Campervan for Gareth.
How wonderful would it be for him to have a holiday, something most of us take for granted. Yes Kieran would still be caring for Gareth, but this will give Gareth the chance to explore the world beyond his home and day care, a world beyond the restrictions of his daily life and a world we can see, but he can't.
Although he is blind he still has 4 other senses that he can use to explore and experience new adventures, (touch, smell, hearing and taste). How wonderful it would be for them to hit the open road and holiday together. Gareth can't process being in busy environments or venues, so family visits and events are limited.
