Ilie Gabuja a computer science student at Dublin City University, is taking on an incredible challenge — cycling 3,000km from the SBHI Open Opportunity Day Service in Dublin, setting off on Friday, June 6th 2025. This isn’t Ilie’s first long-distance ride. Last year, he completed an impressive 400km cycle from Dublin to Galway and back, showing his dedication and passion for cycling. Now, he’s pushing even further to raise funds and awareness for a cause close to his heart.

Ilie is a proud member of the Orwell Wheelers, a renowned cycling club based in Dundrum, Dublin. Established in 1948, the club welcomes cyclists of all levels and has a rich tradition in road racing, touring, randonnee, track, and leisure cycling.

His goal is to raise €2000.00 in support of the SBHI Open Opportunities Service, a vital and life-changing day service that his brother, Anatolie, attends. Since joining in 2024, Anatolie has flourished — building friendships, setting personal goals, and growing in confidence and independence. The service has been a transformative part of his journey, helping him feel included and supported in his community.

"The Open Opportunity Service has meant so much to Anatolie and our family. After spending 19 years at home, always with us, it's wonderful to see him now have a space where he feels welcomed and engaged — even though he doesn’t yet speak the language. He’s happier, more confident, and looks forward to going every day. We’re deeply grateful for this opportunity and the kindness behind it."

The mission of SBHI’s Open Opportunities Service is to empower every participant through education, vocational training, individualised support, and inclusive community activities. This approach not only enhances learning and employment opportunities but also strengthens advocacy, social inclusion, and both physical and mental wellbeing.
