In Memory of Kyle Spillane – Supporting the Irish Kidney Association

When Kyle was just 8 years old, he was diagnosed with Alport Syndrome. At the time, we were told he would eventually need a kidney transplant. Throughout his childhood, Kyle attended regular appointments at Crumlin Hospital. At 16, he began transitioning to adult care, starting appointments at Cork University Hospital (CUH), where he was later seen in the renal unit.

In January 2023, Kyle’s condition began to deteriorate, and by March, he was placed on the kidney transplant list. He also had to begin dialysis, initially twice a week. That summer, Kyle's health declined further. A serious fluid buildup led to several weeks in hospital, including time in ICU. From then on, he required dialysis three times a week.

Not long after, Kyle developed sepsis and was again hospitalized for several weeks. He received a blood transfusion to support his recovery alongside strong antibiotics. Kyle fought incredibly hard and survived the sepsis.

In April 2024, another fluid buildup led to a second ICU stay. Once again, Kyle showed immense strength and fought hard. Kyle was an apprentice electrician and had started his year 2 training in the CEB training centre out by MTU when he got out of hospital.

Kyle celebrated his 21st birthday on the 18th June 2024 But just four days later, on June 22nd, Kyle sadly passed away. His heart could no longer withstand the pressure his body had endured over the last 18 months.

This fundraiser is in Kyle’s memory — to honor his courage, his strength, and his spirit. All proceeds will go to the Irish Kidney Association, who provide incredible support, care, and advocacy for kidney patients and their families.
