Childhood and young adult cancer fundraiser in association with the Dooagh Folk Festival was established to say thank you to some of the many charities and organisations who have helped many children and young adults with their battle with illness and who continue to help countless children and young people in a similar situation.

This years chosen charities lie close too all our hearts here at the Dooagh Folk Festival. This years two chosen charities are Gearoids Smile and Brain Tumour Ireland.

Gearoids Smile, foundation set up in the memory of Gearoid Murphy provides families with Emotional & Psychosocial Support by providing Funds for Play Therapist, Get away & Smile Therapuetic Breaks, Meditation & Yoga for parents on a Childhood Cancer Journey,Yoga & Meditation for Bereaved parents.

Brain Tumour Ireland has been chosen this year as a testement to the strenth and determonation shown by our close frined and fellow Achill musician Gráinne McNamara. At the age of 31 our friend Gráinne was diagnosed with a Grade IV Glioblastoma Multiforme(GBM) which has a very poor prognosis of 12-18 months while being 12 weeks pregnant. With age in her favour and having lived a healthy lifestyle, she undertook a very long and challenging journey of brain surgery, radiotherapy, delivering their miracle baby girl Ceola at 30 weeks weighing just over two pounds and twelve months of chemotherapy. With a strong family support unit around her and a positive mind set, she has battled hard to be here. Three and a half years later she is now living with cancer and continues on this journey. Her love of music has been a huge part of her healing. So much so that Grainne along side her sister Dee have this year launched their debut album “Dóchas” the Irish word for “hope”!!

Brain Tumour Ireland: The Ronnie Fehily Foundation. Ronnie was a healthy 62 year old lady who passed away after being diagnosed with a GBM in January 2012. It was founded by a small group of her family members. BTI is the first nationwide organisation dedicated to brain tumour support and research in Ireland. The charity aims to provide information and support to people diagnosed with brain tumours, their carers/family, friends and medical professionals. It also aims to raise awareness and to support future brain tumour research, diagnosis, treatment and care. It provides online patient support groups and family/carers support groups around the country. It offers paediatric support services and information to help parents understand brain tumour symptoms to help support their children to understand, while also offering family and sibling support.
