Hungry Horse Outside

Each year across Ireland thousands of equines are abandoned. Hungry Horse Outside was set up to alleviate the suffering of as many of these animals as possible.

We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome hundreds of stray, abandoned, unwanted and neglected horses annually. We focus primarily on breaking and training these equines, therefore giving them a brighter future. We do this in an entirely voluntary capacity.

overview

Horses feature enormously in the tradition and heritage of Ireland! The Connemara Pony, Irish Draft, famous Thoroughbreds and Sporthorses – and of course, the iconic donkey on a windswept bog!

It is shameful that reports of neglect and abuse of horses in Ireland has even reached the front page of ‘The New York Times’. Unfortunately, the value of horses has seriously declined – many are virtually worthless. For a farmer they are not worth feeding. For the Celtic Tiger syndicates, they have given their all on the racecourse and have been placed on death row. For others who are now struggling to keep a roof over their heads, they simply cannot afford to look after a much loved pony.

‘Hungry Horse Outside’, based near Newtownforbes, Co.Longford, is a small group of volunteers who’s aim is to help the plight of hungry, neglected and abused Horses, Ponies and Donkeys [as well as the occasional dog, cat and goat!].

where your money goes

100% of your donation goes directly to helping the 100+ horses in our care. We are an entirely voluntary charity we do not pay wages.

history

Set up in 2011 as a direct response to the growing equine welfare problems in Ireland.

The charity adopts a hands on approach.

Although we have finite resources of both time and money, we will whenever possible, respond to reports of serious neglect and either provide assistance in situ [feed, water etc] or remove the animals to an alternative location. [With consent of the owner or in co-operation with the relevant authorities]. Unfortunately we can only currently cover a small geographical area.

In 2013 Hungry Horse Outside helped 312 horses throughout the midlands of Ireland.

We currently have 100+ in our care.
