Blood Bike West

Blood Bike West Limited is a charitable organisation, providing an out-of-hours, all volunteer-run, emergency delivery service to hospitals, healthcare sites (hospice, clinics, care homes, laboratories etc) in the West of Ireland.  Essentially, we are a group of motorbike enthusiasts who volunteer to provide an emergency free transportation service to the HSE in the West of Ireland. We deliver all manner of medical consignments, such as emergency medical supplies, blood and biological laboratory samples, medical equipment, MRI/PET/CT/X-ray discs, human milk, patient files and medication. Our services are offered to any HSE, private hospital or clinic, all year round. By providing this service, we facilitate a massive saving to hospitals in terms of reducing couriers' fees, taxi fares, and freeing up the use of ambulances in urgent medical transportation.

Blood Bike West is made up entirely of Garda-vetted volunteers who give up their time to serve the community and save lives:

  • Controllers. Our careful co-ordinators. Where all our journeys start.
  • Riders. Our heroes in helmets. We ensure the safety of our motorcyclists with RoSPA certification. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) was established as an advocate on all aspects of safety. It assesses and certifies our riders' driving and observation skills, and hazard management. All our riders are RoSPA Gold or Silver certified, keeping both them and you as safe as possible on our roads. Safety of our riders is of utmost priority, that's why we also have a 4-wheeled vehicle on standby during inclement weather, and to complete transportation of larger medical consignments.
  • Committee Members. Controllers and riders who have taken on extra responsibility related to the running of Blood Bike West such as training, maintenance, social media, fundraising and IT.

overview

Blood Bike West was formed in 2012, and was the first Blood Bike group established in Ireland. Our mission is to act as an Emergency Rider Voluntary Service that aims to relieve sickness and protect health by the provision of transport of urgently needed medical consignments primarily, but not exclusively, in the West of Ireland region.

Blood Bike West

history

Blood Bike West started in 2012, and it was based on the successful SERV (Service by Emergency Response Volunteers) system of blood bikes in the UK. A group of like-minded volunteers in Galway formed Blood Bike West with the belief that something as simple as a delivery service can improve patient outcomes. That was in 2012, and we started with 2 bikes and a handful of volunteers. Today we have 4 bikes, an all-weather vehicle, and 50 members. Blood Bike West has gone from being the first and only Blood Bike group in Ireland, to being one of 8 or 9 nationwide.
