Cork ARC Cancer Support House

Cause Description

Cork ARC Cancer Support House was established in 2003 to provide a holistic centre in which people with cancer and their families can find emotional support and practical help.

The Chairman of our Board of Trustees is Prof. Seamus O'Reilly a Consultant Medical Oncologist and Clinical Professor of Medicine at University College Cork.

Cork ARC is a safe haven for people with cancer and their families, where you will find information, practical help and emotional support free of charge.  Whatever stage of your diagnosis or treatment, we believe that no one should have to do it alone. Our aim is to provide therapies that complement the medical model, so as to make a difference to the lives of those affected by cancer. Our centres are based in Cork city, Bantry, Youghal and at the NICHE Community Health Project on Cork city's North side.

All of our services are available free of charge.

Overview

Cork ARC Cancer Support House is a nurse led service supported by over 100 volunteer listeners, therapists and counsellors. For 15 years, our cancer support services have been supporting cancer patients, their families and their carers, free of charge.

Our centres are homely, welcoming places where visitors can drop in without an appointment and talk in confidence with one of our trained volunteers. We also provide a free telephone support service and many complimentary therapies designed to relieve the stress of a cancer diagnosis, such as counselling, massage, reflexology, art therapy, yoga, pilates and tai chi.

Our Information & Education Supports offer patients and relatives the opportunity to learn more about topics such as diet, bereavement, lymphoedema, managing hormonal treatments, and prostate cancer. In addition to these services, we provide counselling, support groups and a weekly drop in
Hour of Calm meditation session. We have a dedicated Breast Cancer Service where our Breast Cancer Nurse Counsellor meets visitors on a one to one basis and also runs a regular breast cancer support group.

We have been growing rapidly over the last two years, we are open Monday to Friday at our centre in O’Donovan Rossa Road, and our drop-in and group support service is open and very active at the NICHE Community Health Project on Cork city’s north side every Friday morning. Our West Cork service has grown to two days per week, Tuesdays & Thursdays, and in May this year we opened our doors in Youghal on Wednesday’s, supporting cancer patients and their families in the communities of East Cork and West Waterford.

We provide a wide range of vital cancer supports, all free of charge, for people whose lives have been affected by cancer and we rely almost entirely on the generosity of our supporters to allow us to continue offering these services free of charge to cancer patients and their loved ones when they need it most.

Where Your Money Goes

Our cancer support houses are located in Cork city, Bantry, Youghal and at the NICHE Community Health Project in Cork city. As all our services are provided free of charge and supported by fundraising activity, your donation and support is vital. Your support is essential in helping our visitors in helping them to come to terms with their cancer diagnosis and its many implications.
