The Donkey Sanctuary (Ireland ) Ltd

The Donkey Sanctuary exists to protect donkeys from cruelty and neglect and to provide homes for those that are in need of protective care and those that can no longer be cared for by their owners .Over 5,500 donkeys from all parts of Ireland have been taken into The Donkey Sanctuary at Liscarrol in Mallow Co Cork. Suitable, fit donkeys may be found homes through our Rehoming Scheme and those needing more intensive care and ongoing veterinary treatment become permanent residence

The Sanctuary is set in the beautiful rolling countryside of County Cork just outside the village of Liscarroll in Ireland.

We have taken in over 5,500 donkeys rescued from all parts of the country. Many donkeys have been abandoned or put in a field and given little or no attention after having worked for their owners for years, hauling peat or pulling a cart. We strongly believe that their suffering should cease.

Every donkey taken into the Sanctuary is guaranteed a life of loving care. For many it is the first time in their lives that they have felt loving hands and heard quiet voices. Great care is given to ensuring that each donkey has individual attention. We are well aware of the strong bonds formed by a group of donkeys. In cases where more than one donkey arrives from a home we ensure that they remain together but, in time, some donkeys form new friendships with animals, often those nearer their own age.

Great efforts are taken in pairing up single donkeys, as they are sociable creatures and the majority need the close companionship of their own kind.

Opening times

The Sanctuary is open at the following times with free admission and parking:

Monday-Friday, 9.00 am to 4.30 pm

Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays, 10.00 am to 5.00 pm

Please note that the gates close promptly, but you are welcome to to walk around the Sanctuary if your car is outside the gates after the closing times.

Dogs are very welcome to join you on your visit, although please ensure they are kept on a lead at all times.

We welcome group visits as the donkeys love the added fuss and attention they receive. However, advance notice of larger parties would help us enormously.

We totally rely on the generosity of the public and contributions in one of our collecting boxes will be most gratefully received.

Paddy Barrett has a long tradition of helping animals and donkeys in particular.

Paddy's grandfather kept donkeys on the site at Knockardbane from 1926 and this has now become our main Donkey Sanctuary site which is open to the public.

Paddy's father Garrett was a welfare officer in the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) from 1964 to 1981 and worked tirelessly to help donkeys and animals throughout Ireland.

Paddy himself worked as an Inspector for the ISPCA from February 1982 to July 1987, whilst at the same time running a rescue centre for donkeys in Ireland.

The Donkey Sanctuary UK was founded in 1969 by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen, MBE. She dedicated her life to champion donkeys, and it is through her devotion that the Sanctuary grew to be the international charity it is today.

Sadly Dr Svendsen passed away in 2011 but her memory lives on in our work, as does her eternal motto that, in everything we do, donkeys will always come first, second and third.

On 1st August 1987 The Donkey Sanctuary Ireland became affiliated with The Donkey Sanctuary UK. The Donkey Sanctuary Ireland registered as an Irish charity in 2011.

Since the sanctuary was opened in 1987, over 5,500 donkeys have been taken into our care and provided with loving homes. We continue to rescue and care for abandoned, abused and neglected donkeys from every corner of Ireland.

During the last 30 years, we have made a profound difference to the lives of donkeys and people all around the country. This is down to the drive and belief of our wonderful Founders and all of our supporters for your devotion and continued support.
