The David Cahill Rehabilitation Fund

This is my Son David Cahill's Story....In September 2008, David who was 21 at the time went on Holidays to Crete. On the second day of his holidays we were contacted to be told

that David was on a life support machine after suffering three major heart attacks. As a family we urgently tried to organise flights to get to David as soon as possible, this was so stressful. Finally getting to Crete, we were shocked and devastated to see David hooked up to so much wires and equipment to keep him alive, and then to be told that there was no hope for him. Myself and my two other sons Steven & Peter and my daughter Maeve stayed in Crete for two and a half weeks as we had to organise a special Air Ambulance to fly David Home.

As a family we had to make up 37,000 euro to cover the cost of the Air Ambulance, this was achieved by borrowing from the bank and with the great and unbelievable support of the people of Ballymun and Finglas doing fund raising.

David was transferred to Blanchardstown Hospital where he stayed for nine months, he was then transferred to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire. Here David was diagnosed as been in a Minimally conscious state, with profound brain injury and blind. He remained there for three months were he received physiotherapy and occupational therapy. He was then transferred back to Blanchardstown hospital for another year, and from December 2010 to date David has been is in a nursing home in Balrothery, Balbriggan were he gets 24/7 nursing care, as his Mother I am their everyday to look after him and have trained to do so also.

The last six years have been so hard, but we have watched David progress slowly in his own way, from someone who was told that he had only 2 days to live from the start, my son David is an AMAZING INSPIRATIONAL person, who to this day is proving everyone wrong.

We have adapted our home to suit David's needs which cost us €18,000, towards the building, and every weekend myself and my husband Peter take David home and look after him. In December 2014, with the help of our Private Physiotherapist Barbel Pankoke, David was assessed by a Team in Germany who have their own Private Rehabilitation Clinic called Zentrum Der Rehabilitation and we got David assessed by one of their Neurological therapist, who saw GREAT potential in David, and who are in a position to help him.

When we reach our fundraising target, to get David to Germany, he will undergo an average of four hours therapy per day, which will include Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Neuro Psyscology, Lokomat and Erigo Therapy. For six months of this Therapy and David's Medical needs & transport to and from Germany, we need to raise at least €350,000.

As Parents we really hope that David will benefit from this Therapy and go on to the next stage as they have great success stories. WE HAVE TO GIVE THIS OPPERTUNITY TO OUR DAVID.

We as a family would really appreciate all donations big or small in order to go towards David's Rehabilitaion.
