Everest Base Camp Expedition with Earths Edge
March 28th to April 14th 2024
My
wife and I decided to do something memorable for our 35th Wedding
Anniversary and her 60th birthday.
After some brief deliberation, we settled on a once-in-a-lifetime experience to trek to Everest Base Camp (EBC) in Nepal.
We've
never hiked at altitude before and have never visited this part of the
world...so it should be both an interesting challenge and a wonderful
opportunity to experience Nepalese culture.
We
will start our trek at 2,610m altitude from the airport in Lukla and gradually
make our way over 8 days of trekking to Everest Base Camp at 5,364m.
Along the route, we'll take in incredible views of the Himalayas, cross a few (scary) suspension bridges and get to visit wonderful Sherpa villages, including the Sherpa capital, Namche Bazaar.
Weather
(and physical condition) permitting, we will do a bonus hike to Kala Pathar
(5,550m) to get the best views of Everest at sunrise!
We'll
commence our descent over 5 days, taking in the Tengboche monastery at
3,860m.
In
all we are told that we will cover 145km in thirteen days of trekking.
I
have been a Group Board member of Vision Ireland (NCBI) for 9 years.
I see this trek to EBC in Nepal, as a great opportunity to raise funds for Vision Ireland, an organisation that I have witnessed go from strength to strength in providing much-needed services to blind and people with vision impairment across Ireland. Like many charitable organisations, raising the funds to provide essential services rests on the shoulders of the staff in Vision Ireland.
That is a great achievement! Well done.
Roddy, I never knew you were part Sherpa! Well done.
