From my time working with the Simon Community in Dublin in the late eighties, I've always admired the work done by the Peter McVerry trust. Fr. McVerry started working in the inner city in Dublin in the early 70s and since then has devoted his life to helping young homeless people. He opened a hostel for homeless boys aged 12-16 in 1979 and he moved from that to providing services and accommodation for these boys as they grow older. The charity now has 11 homeless hostels, over 100 apartments, a residential drug detox centre and two drug stabilization services. Peter McVerry Trust is committed to reducing homelessness and the harm caused by drug misuse and social disadvantage. Peter McVerry Trust provides low-threshold entry services, primarily to younger persons with complex needs, and offers pathways out of homelessness based on the principles of the Housing First model and within a framework that is based on equal opportunities, dignity and respect.
