In January 5 years ago I started doing a bit of jogging to get fit with the aim of completing a 10k run. On 20th August I will be taking part in Ironman Copenhagen comprising 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and a Marathon. For me this has been a personal goal over the past few years and one that I have been training for over the past 2 years. And my hope is that in taking part in this event I can raise some funds for charity in the process.
One evening in 1990, I was on the quays in Limerick when I saw a young man clinb the railings and prepare to throw himself into the dark rushing waters. Luckily I managed to grab hold of him and talk to him. He was sobbing and very distraught but I managed to persuade him to climb back onto the path and he went on his way. This was a very disturbing experience and as I was relatively new to Limerick I was unaware of the number of people who saw jumping in the river as their only option. Now there are very dedicated and brave group of people who patrol the rivers and bridges at night. They need resources and more volunteers to help out to allow them achieve a 365 day a year service.
Having a home to go to every night is something we take for granted. Not having that luxury of even a basic roof over your head is one that I cannot even imagine. The Mid West Simon reaches out to people who are homeless, at risk of homelessness or experiencing housing difficulties.
So please if you can give a small bit to help these great local charities. Thank you.
