Using his contacts back home in Newbridge, (Ireland) Paddy O'Connor galvanized people and raised funds to buy land, just outside Nairobi in the Ngong Hills. He then recruited a team of Irish volunteers to travel out to Kenya to build the complex, that is now the Cara Girl Rescue Centre. Paddy brought alongside him Roisin Kellyand together they formed a volunteer team of management to assist in overseeing, raise funding and direct CARA operations from Ireland. Incidentally the parent company is CARA PROJECTS which incorporates CGRC, where it is important to point out 1) They are an Irish Registered Charity (CHY18652) and a Registered Kenyan NGO 2) They are are totally funded by voluntary contributions; no income is paid to the Irish Board of Management. All Board Members have been to Kenya to work at CGRC 3) They have no political or religious affiliations.
The ultimate aim is to empower all girls to have independent self-assured lives, both economically and emotionally by putting into place practical initiatives to positively challenge the cycle of female abuse and dependency that originally brought them into the care of the centre. CGRC is situated up in the beautiful, but impoverished, Ngong Hills area, six miles outside of Nairobi. Here the secure, gated building complex, comprising dormitory, care, leisure and vocational facilities as well as an outdoor leisure and recreational children's area allows CGRC to work directly with Kajaido County Children's Office as the first point of refuge for girls rescued from a variety of reasons involving physical, sexual abuse, neglect, abandonment, potential child marriage from within the Ngong Hills Region. Whilst in the centre every girl in their care is given a family environment encompassing, love, welfare, trust, education, schooling and mentoring training, involving, girl life training. The aim is to create for the girls the opportunity to build self-confidence, together with giving them vocational skills to enable them to be independent in their future lifestyle choices
