This is a Good News Story of how Jake, a young adult with Autism Spectrum Disorder triumphed against adversity during the pandemic, linked up with a U.S. Producer and fulfilled a lifelong dream. Jake is now about to release his debut single "Sun Will Come Back Around" on National Radio on 9th November 2020!

The impact of Covid-19 restrictions have been particularly severe on people with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Disruption to daily life, missing their friends, altered routines, a drop off of available activities and services, and limited physical activity due to social distancing has had a significant negative impact on them.  The pandemic has brought a reality that we have never known before, it is an unprecedented time adding a sense of vulnerability and anxiety.

Gheel (www.gheel.ie) was founded in Dublin in 1971 by a small group of parents supporting people with Autism in the greater Dublin and North Kildare region.  This charity shines some brightness by searching for opportunities and encouraging personal growth among adult service users with Autism Spectrum Disorder.  Jake has been a service user at Gheel for just over two years and was badly affected during the Covid 19 pandemic. He lost his Grandmother and was unable to attend his much-loved service in Gheel which he usually attends five days a week.

Then Jake met Xander.

Xander Goodheart is a professional music producer and musician based in Brooklyn New York.  One of Gheel's staff members reached out to Xander at a time when our ability to provide direct support to Jake was halted by the recent pandemic. As a way to cheer Jake up, Xander produced and recorded a song called DJ Toffo for Jake in his favourite genre that highlighted his interests and personality traits. CHECK OUT THIS ORIGINAL TRACK MADE FOR JAKE HERE:

This initial song turned out to be just the beginning of a relationship between Jake and Xander. Through a series of video calls, Jake and Xander developed and created a new single with the aim of reaching out to everyone who had been affected by the recent pandemic.

Jake has a huge interest in music and has a goal of becoming a DJ and music producer often referring to himself as DJ Toffo to Gheel staff in the past. This dream of Jake’s to produce and make music became a reality when Xander asked Jake to collaborate on what is now 'Sun Will Come Back Around'

Jake introduces the track with his own personal message of positivity to everyone affected by Covid-19. Through a series of video calls Jake and Xander chose backing music, instrument samples and the overall song tempo. Based on their collaborative effort, Xander produced the song from his studio in new York and the final track was then mixed here in ireland by [email protected] 

The staff team were so proud of the work that Jake and Xander did on this single that we thought we could share this story to hopefully bring some good news to people during these tough times. In the same vein, Jake would like to give something back to the service that has brought him so much joy, and would like to raise money for Gheel’s community fund.
