Purple House Cancer Support Centre has launched an appeal to enable them to equip their new Cancer Rehabilitation Gym at their new centre 2 Duncarin Terrace, Quinsborough, Bray, Co. Wicklow.
The new gym will cater for thousands of people living with cancer in the Leinster Area and will aid their recovery from cancer through physical activity rehabilitation.
Cancer survivor Dylan Lynch from Wicklow was hand to launch the appeal to provide him with a safe environment to continue his rehabilitation.
Dylan said
“In 2013 I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and I relapsed in 2017. I spent most of 2017 as an inpatient in Crumlin Children’s Hospital. I had a rare adverse reaction to his treatment which caused issues with my central nervous system and necessitated a five week stay in the intensive care unit.
As a result of this I needed to learn how to walk again. When I left Crumlin, I was in a wheelchair and had to regularly attend Physiotherapy appointments in both Crumlin and the National Rehabilitation Centre in Dun Laoghaire. One of the biggest obstacles for me was the availability of local gyms for me to use. A gym in Purple House would have provided me with a safe environment to continue with my rehabilitation. I would have been with a team I am familiar with and the people who supported me throughout his treatment. I can't wait to avail of the gym in Purple House when it is up and running!”
Physiotherapists have endorsed the project and Dr Grainne Sheill, a chartered physiotherapist from St James Hospital and Trinity College Dublin said:
“There is currently no outpatient exercise oncology service available to patients in any of the eight national cancer centres. The proposed service would address this, and provide exercise rehabilitation programme to patients receiving cancer treatment. Patients will be screened for cancer related physical impairments and prescribed an individualised, progressive exercise programmes. This service would be a large step towards the development of survivorship services involving physical rehabilitation in Ireland”
To help Dylan to make the gym a reality, we need to raise €25,000
