Inspired, Exceeding Myself and Paying it Forward.
Over 20 year ago I had the idea of running a marathon, but after a short while in training I managed to convince myself that this was something I would never be able to do. Since then I went into a period of gradual and ongoing sedentary decline and neglect.
Since then I had the pleasure of knowing Gavin Glynn and his family and watched in awe as Gavin fought childhood cancer and his parents moved mountains to provide him with every treatment available, at the same time ensuring that they could stay together and celebrate life as a family as much as possible. At Gavin's funeral I was struck by how much their time together as a family meant to his parents and siblings, how the memory of these times will be with them forever, and by his parents pledge to help other families who find themselves in similarly challenging circumstances.
I realised then that my life was a privilege and that the personal goal and challenge that I had abandoned so many years ago could be achieved and exceeded if I could only apply a fraction of the strength and commitment I saw from a four year old boy and his family.
I have now joined my local athletics club and have set myself a programme for this year that will see me take in two 10k events, a 10 mile, three half-marathons, a 3/4 marathon and 2 marathons - detailed below.
I have decided to raise what funds I can for the Gavin Glynn Foundation so that they can help other families battling childhood cancer obtain the medical care they need and to stay together during this challenging time.
Please lend your support by donating what you can, and feel free to join me at any of these events.
