2 years ago I trained and did a cage fight for SII, I got slaughtered as I’m 5, 6 and not a fighter… In all honesty I loved the training and the experience. Now as I will be 51 this year I don’t think I will be getting into a cage again so I decided that I wanted to do something really hard but also something that doesn’t involve getting hit in the head, repeatedly !!
I don’t really like running so decided on the Marathon Des Sables as I needed to do something that didn't feel like a holiday and would be an enormous challenge for me. 6 marathons in 6 days in the Sahara while carrying my own food and whatever I need for those six days. The organiser will provide water and I bring and run with everything else. As I type this my normal long run is 5km..I did 14 km in Glendalough once and needed a week to recover :-) !! So I thought ok I can try to raise a lot for this as it will be hell so I am looking for €25,000.
Why Spinal Injuries Ireland… Well that’s a hard one as there are so many charities. Like all charities in Ireland funding is tight, all are deserving. I know some people that have spinal injuries and their lives have changed in an instant.. Many things can change a life in an instant, a cancer diagnosis, sudden illness, death in the family.. The list is endless but I picked SII as one of the main charities I work with as an old friend of mine fell on his birthday and broke his back.. That just hit me and ever since SII have been the main charity I fundraise for.. There are so many others that I could have picked but that is the one I am drawn to. That’s the WHY !! Everyone seems to say you need a WHY in order to get through these things…
