People to People: Ireland in Solidarity with Greece Appeal

Type of Event : Other
When : 10th August 2016
Description :

Nearly 160,000 people have arrived by sea in Greece this year alone, 89 % of which are from the worlds top 10 refugee-producing countries. 38% of those arriving by sea are children and there are estimated to be approximately 2,278 unaccompanied children in Greece. Upon arrival many are stranded in difficult humanitarian conditions in camps on the islands and mainland Greece. Similar to our action in 2015 (Humanitarian Support Drive for Refugees) the Irish Refugee Council (IRC) has set up a fundraising drive to assist people on the ground in Greece.

http://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/11360482_refugee-solidarity-appeal.html Maria Hennessy, Legal Officer at the Irish Refugee Council Independent Law Centre is travelling to Greece from 10th-19th August and will visit Athens as well as the Islands, Lesvos and Chios to gather more information about the situation on the ground and assist with the delivery of vital aid. Her travel is self-funded and part of her trip will involve meeting local legal practitioners and other stakeholders to ascertain where the IRC can be of assistance in safe and legal access for families, unaccompanied children and individuals to Ireland as well as the delivery of training and assistance on family reunion and the Dublin Regulation.

In coordination with local NGOs and volunteer groups the funds donated will support the provision of basic amenities such as food, sanitation facilities, clothing and other essential supports. This response only addresses vital practical support along the way but it sends an important message of solidarity for those seeking protection in Europe and adds to the generous support and solidarity expressed by the people of Ireland. The IRC will continue to advocate for safe and legal pathways to protection for refugees and further information is available here on our advocacy work in this area.

A full report of the delivery of all donations will follow the trip and all money raised will go directly to projects and groups providing front line support in Greece.

Donate to this refugee solidarity appeal.
