Attracta passed away on Sunday, July 2nd, 2023 at 2pm due to complications from ovarian cancer. She was a wife, mum, mamó and lawyer, passionate about her family, learning, human rights, the rule of law and helping others.
Her passing was a shock to us; we didn’t expect it, and it has left an unfillable void in our lives. Attracta made everyone feel special and her light, positivity, love and spirit will live on for an eternity.
Her battle with ovarian cancer was brief and brutal. She was only diagnosed in February 2022 .
We know we can’t do anything to bring Attracta back, but what we can do is work towards a future where no family has to endure the loss we have faced. Nobody should lose their Attracta. That is why we are fundraising for an accurate test into the early detection of ovarian cancer.
Ovarian cancer is ruthless. Over 400 women are diagnosed annually . It’s an extremely aggressive form of cancer, and in Ireland, there are over 290 deaths every year . These women are more than statistics; they are someone's wife, mother, daughter, sister or friend. The cruelty of this cancer lies in its stealth; often, it goes undetected until it reaches advanced stages 3 or 4. This drastically educes the chances of survival. The reality is very stark: 7 in 10 women are diagnosed too late .
There is currently no accurate test for the early detection of ovarian cancer. This is why we are fundraising for the charity Breakthrough Cancer Research. We are on a mission to deliver an early detection test for ovarian cancer.
We have initiated the Attracta O’Regan PhD Scholarship for research into the early detection of ovarian cancer. This is a comprehensive four year research project, costing €149,000. All donations go to Breakthrough Cancer Research for research into the early detection of ovarian cancer.
How are we raising the €149,000 for the research?
In September 2024, our son Ian, myself, and eight of Attracta's friends are embarking on a self-funded cycle from Paris to Nice to raise €149,000 for this vital aspect of women's health care.
All donations will go to fund this research scholarship. Please click on the DONATE button.

Great idea, thanks Ultan. Attracta had many friends in the legal community and this is a little contribution from six of us who knew and loved her. Good luck!

Breakthrough Cancer Research funds the efficient and effective development of new treatments for cancer. We work to significantly impact the number of people who can survive this disease. Research programmes funded by Breakthrough Cancer Research must focus on translating lab discoveries into new treatment opportunities. To this end we work closely with clinicians in practice all over Ireland so that our research is targeted at finding new options for poor prognosis and incurable cancers.
