How-To: Support a Family in Need

May 7, 2025 | 5 min read | Community Support

When a family is facing a crisis – it’s only natural to want to help. Fundraising through iDonate.ieis one of the most impactful ways to show support. Here’s how you can get started and make a real difference.

1. Talk to the Family – Understand Their Needs

Before launching a fundraiser, speak directly with the family. Ask how they’re managing, what kind of financial help would make a difference, and whether they’re happy for you to fundraise on their behalf. Understanding their exact needs helps you craft a campaign that’s clear, respectful, and accurate.

You can also direct them to explore state supports such as those offered by the Department of Social Protection or local community groups – they may be eligible for additional help.

2. Create a Clear and Personal Fundraiser

Choose a title that’s specific, authentic and heartfelt:
“Support the O’Sullivan Family After Tragic Loss”

Then, write a detailed story that will:

  • Explains your relationship to the family
  • Describes their current challenges
  • Shares how funds will be used (e.g., rent, childcare, medical bills)
  • Suggests other ways people can help beyond donating

Ask the family to review the story before you publish it.

3. Use Images to Build Connection

Photos and videos help potential donors emotionally connect with the cause. Ask the family for permission to share:

  • A family photo
  • Any relevant visuals of their situation (e.g., hospital or home recovery)
  • A short video message, if they’re comfortable doing so

These visuals can make your story more human, more real – and more likely to get support.

4. Reach Out to Close Circles First

Share your campaign with friends and family privately first. Early donations help build momentum and increase trust when you launch publicly. Consider:

  • Sending personal messages via WhatsApp or email
  • Ask those close to the family to share the campaign

5. Share Widely and Consistently

Once your fundraiser is live and has some early donations:

  • Post regularly on social media (Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn)
  • Ask people to re-share your link via WhatsApp & email
  • Tag and thank early donors in your posts
  • Consider organising a local event to complement your online campaign

Whether it’s a coffee morning, quiz night, or bake sale – local events help rally a community and boost your impact.
