Pieta adopt our latest technology for Darkness Into Light

73% of total funds on iDonate raised through iDonate Tap
Pieta is the suicide and self-harm prevention charity. They provide free, nationwide therapy services to those in need, whether they are struggling with suicidal thoughts, self-harming, or grieving the loss of a loved one to suicide. Every week, Pieta therapists deliver almost 1,000 hours of therapy to people across Ireland.
Darkness into Light

Pieta’s Darkness into Light is a powerful event that brings supporters together to share a sunrise moment and raise essential funds for those affected by suicide and self-harm.

Every year on May 11th, participants unite to create a global sunrise moment, standing as a beacon against the darkness of suicide and self-harm.

The event began in 2009 with 400 people gathering in Dublin’s Phoenix Park for a 5km walk, marking the start of Darkness into Light to support Pieta.

Each year, the walk fosters community connection and offers hope to those impacted by suicide. Dedicated volunteers, both in Ireland and internationally, return annually to ensure the event’s success and raise awareness about suicide and self-harm prevention. After a hiatus during the pandemic, Pieta resumed in-person walks in 2022, both in Ireland and around the world.

On May 11th, 2024, Darkness into Light saw an incredible 100,000 participants walking both locally and globally.

The Challenge:
As of 2023, contactless payments account for approximately 85% of all point-of-sale (POS) transactions in Ireland. This indicates a significant adoption rate, with the majority of consumers preferring the convenience and speed of contactless payments for everyday purchases.

Naturally, this trend is not sector specific and the all indications point to a continued trend in this regard. Bucket collections are still an integral part of any charities fundraising and in particular for this event, and so the challenges arose around meeting and if possible exceeding previous years collections amounts and increasing donation opportunities.

The Solution:
iDonate were thrilled to work with Pieta at their Marlay Park location this year, one of the biggest walks in the country. Pieta was open to utilising our iDonate Tap App meaning they could take contactless donations from supporters not carrying cash. Supporters were happy in knowing their donation was transferred securely and received a thank you email as receipt.

Fundraisers were able to download the app onto their devices and login under their fundraising account and from there link to the Marlay Park event and start accepting donations instantaneously through the app using just their phones.

Pieta were able to track payments, by event and by fundraiser through the iDonate backend.

The Results:
The event, again, was a huge success for Pieta and the iDonate Tap app was welcomed by supporters and volunteers with open arms.

Key Figures:
73% of total funds raised on iDonate for the event were raised through iDonate Tap
Average Donation was 22.64 or up to 10x more than the average cash donation*
Average raised per hour when using iDonate Tap is €266.23 or up to 6.6x more than bucket collections**
